Ashraf Uddin

Ashraf Uddin, a renowned accountant, had an idea one evening while working. He pondered the potential of starting a training program for the curry industry. After conducting some research and
discussing his idea with friends involved in the curry industry, he applied for funding. The European Social Fund appreciated his concept and granted a quarter of a million pounds for the program. Thus, the Tower Hamlets Training Corum for Caterers was born.

This initiative trained thousands in chef and management skills, with over 300 trainees eventually establishing their own businesses across Europe. Ashraf Uddin’s vision to elevate the Bangladeshi food and curry industry to a global level was realized, as Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine became a staple choice for many. The BBCA has been proud to have him as a member from the start and dedicates this article to expressing gratitude to Mr. Ashraf Uddin.

Arriving in the UK in the early ‘70s, Uddin, though an accountant by profession, harbored a deep passion for the curry industry. Following the success of his training forum, he ventured into the restaurant business, opening his first establishment in Birmingham. Later, he expanded to London, where he faced the challenge of altering the local perception of curry. Initially, he noticed British patrons avoiding the scent of curry, but through strategic management and catering adjustments, he gradually won over the public. Nowadays, curry is a beloved option for many.

Uddin’s belief in unity led him to contribute significantly to the community. Originally a member of the Pakistan Caterers Association, he and other Bangladeshi restaurant owners saw the need for a dedicated Bangladeshi organisation for restaurant owners. Their relentless efforts united over 7,000 members to form a substantial association.

Ashraf Uddin’s decision to serve his community, diverging from a conventional career path, has greatly influenced the international success of the Bangladeshi restaurant and curry business. We deeply respect and commend this visionary for his guidance and contributions to our journey.
